Every workplace individual encounters various challenges, including the way to interact with superiors, which is crucial to our career development and daily work environment. Understanding the kind of leaders worth following is an important task for us. Here are some perspectives on the traits of a good boss:
Firstly, a truly excellent leader is usually very demanding of you. From my personal experience, when I interned at Zhihu during its peak period in the industry, I had published a vast number of e-books, which greatly honed my writing and editing skills. My boss, a senior from Peking University, had extremely high expectations of me. Whenever I made a minor mistake, such as a typo, she would always point it out with a screenshot and question me, and my series of apologies seemed to be of little help. This strict management style embedded itself deeply in my mind, making me resolve not to repeat the same approach when I became a leader. However, when the time for me to be the boss came, I realized that being strict might be the only way to create a lasting impression.
Secondly, a good leader provides a stage for you to showcase your talents. In reality, finding a leader who constantly offers new battlefields, allowing you to continuously expand your horizons and fields of expertise is rare, because that requires the leader’s own venture to have a continuous drive and direction. However, for those navigating the workplace, finding a worthy boss to follow can be as difficult as searching for pearls, since most of the time, leaders are also groping their way forward amidst the uncertainty of the battleground, making it a challenge to provide stable growth opportunities for their employees.
Furthermore, a good leader can give positive feedback on your work outcomes. They are able to accurately recognize the contributions you make to the company and thus offer affirmation and rewards. This type of positive feedback is an important motivation for employees to continue making progress. As employees, we largely depend on this kind of positive response from leaders to affirm the value of our work.
In conclusion, as workers, we need to clearly recognize which leaders are worth following. Finding a boss who is both strict and knows how to positively motivate requires some luck and insight. But once encountered, this will be a valuable asset in your career.
It is well-known that in the workplace, money is not the only pursuit. It is unrealistic to expect to accumulate your first million through work alone; it’s better to take a long-term view. In most cases, the income of an ordinary employee may just be enough to sustain living and will not accumulate into a large fortune quickly. For instance, there’s a significant difference in base salaries for salespeople in different cities, ranging from three thousand to eight thousand, and even with excellent performance commissions, your annual salary wouldn’t be much higher than this number.
What matters is to ensure your superiors see your potential and achievement so that you will be given a broader platform and, thus, more opportunities for growth. Over time, perhaps in the next establishment, you may have a chance to become a partner or business manager, which is the correct path upward in one’s career.
For business leaders, being cautious of the sense of authority is equally important. When one is in a position of authority, it’s easy to lose the keen touch with the business and the trust of employees. As the boss, you may feel that you are the absolute leader, but if you become too indulged in this feeling, you will not be able to truly understand customer needs and grasp market dynamics in time.
That’s why I believe that deep communication with the team every day is very important. It is only through daily interactions with the team that one can truly understand consumer needs and discover more attractive products or topics.
Some bosses overly emphasize “management,” “strategy,” and “values,” but if these concepts are not supported by actual benefits, they are just empty terms. Strategy should have practical significance only after the business has reached a certain scale of revenue. A really good strategy is a summary of various tactics, learning lessons and making improvements from them.
Therefore, a good sense of business acuity and deep understanding of the business are indispensable qualities of a good boss. If you have such a boss, cherish them; if not, perhaps it’s time to consider looking for new job opportunities.
