The number of people awaiting organ transplants has exceeded 140,000, and the regional sharing mechanism awaits a solution.

Organ transplantation is a symbolic medical technology representing the medical standards of a country, and organ donation is an important manifestation of social civilization. In recent years, our country has made breakthrough progress in the field of organ donation and transplantation, earning widespread recognition from the international community. However, given the large number of patients waiting for organ transplants in our country, the existing organ donations cannot meet the needs of all patients, leaving many in a prolonged state of waiting, with some unfortunately passing away during the long wait.

Specific data shows that more than 140,000 patients in our country are registered and waiting for organ transplants, while the number of actual organ transplants completed each year is less than 20,000. Although the cumulative number of large organs donated in our country has exceeded 147,000, ranking second in the world, this achievement is still minimal compared to the vast demand for organs.

There are some irrationalities in the current organ allocation system, especially in the mechanism for cross-regional organ sharing, which is not yet perfected. The current situation is that donated organs are usually allocated and used within the province, and the proportion of cross-provincial allocation is very small, a phenomenon that is increasingly becoming the norm. As a result, many central cities with high medical standards, such as Beijing and Shanghai, although having a substantial need for organ transplants, have their transplant patients’ waiting times significantly extended due to regional restrictions.

According to statistics, millions of patients in our country are in the end-stage of renal failure and are receiving dialysis treatment, and the number of new liver failure patients each year is estimated to be between 500,000 and 1 million. This creates a huge demand for organ donation.

In order to alleviate the contradiction between organ supply and demand and improve the efficiency of organ transplants, there have been suggestions to establish a mechanism for shared organ donation among medical center cities in different regions. This proposal calls for scientifically planning the geographic restrictions on organ acquisition based on various factors such as the source of patients and waiting time, thereby encouraging and promoting organ sharing between regions. For example, Shanghai could establish an organ-sharing network with other cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, and Beijing might share organ distributions with the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and so on. This measure not only helps to better match medical service capabilities with the actual needs of patients but is also critical in saving more lives at pivotal moments.
